Electric fence installation — Shockline, tape, and add-on systems

Electric fencing that works — installed correctly with proper grounding.

Electric fencing is one of the most effective behaviour management and perimeter containment tools available for horses and livestock — but only when it is installed correctly. Poor grounding, under-powered energizers, and incorrect tensioning all produce a system that trains animals to ignore the fence rather than respect it. System Equine installs electric and Shockline systems correctly, from energizer selection through to grounding.

Electric Fence Systems We Install

Standalone systems and add-on rails — all installed properly

PREMIUM VISIBLE ELECTRIC OPTION

Shockline Electric Coated Wire

  • High-tensile wire core with polymer coating — same appearance as Flex Fence
  • Gives electric fence the visibility benefit 1.4” in diameter
  • Most popular electric product for properties also using Flex Fence — consistent look
  • Can run as a standalone multi-rail system or as individual add-on rails
  • Energizer and grounding included in installation

Best for: Shared fence lines, horse properties with existing Flex Fence, any property wanting visible electrification

ADD ELECTRIFICATION TO ANY EXISTING FENCE

Electric Tape Top-Rail Add-On

  • Electric tape installed inside or above top rail of existing fence
  • Stops horses from leaning, reaching over, or playing with shared fence lines
  • Can also be installed at bottom of fence to stop reaching under
  • Minimal installation time — most existing fence lines can be electrified in a single visit
  • Tape available in multiple widths for visibility

Best for: Properties wanting to improve behaviour management on existing Flex, board, or wire fence

ECONOMICAL PERIMETER AND ROTATIONAL GRAZING

Standalone Multi-Strand Electric

  • Multiple strands of electric wire or tape on step-in or permanent posts
  • Most economical option for large-area rotational grazing systems
  • Can be reconfigured as grazing rotation changes
  • Appropriate for cattle, horses in large managed pastures, and sheep
  • Not recommended as a primary perimeter fence for high-pressure horse containment

Best for: Rotational grazing, cattle pastures, large-area horse management, budget-sensitive perimeters

THE PART MOST INSTALLATIONS GET WRONG

Energizer Selection & Grounding

  • Energizer (charger) selected and sized for fence length, wire type, and vegetation load
  • Under-powered energizers fail to train animals and are quickly ignored
  • Grounding rods installed to correct depth and spacing for Ontario soil conditions
  • Poor grounding is the most common cause of an ineffective electric fence
  • All System Equine electric installations include proper energizer and grounding specification

Best for: All electric fence installations — this is not optional

Frequently Asked Questions

Electric fence installation — common questions

1. What is Shockline and how is it different from standard electric wire?

Shockline is a high-tensile electric wire with a polymer coating — similar to Flex Fence — that makes it highly visible to horses while still delivering an electric shock on contact. Standard electric wire is either bare galvanized wire or white tape. Shockline is the premium choice for properties that want the appearance of coated wire.

2. How do I stop my horses from leaning over the fence?

A hot top rail — Shockline, electric tape, or bare electric wire — installed inside or above the existing top rail is the most effective solution. One or two contacts teaches horses to respect the top of the fence line quickly and decisively. We can add a hot top rail to most existing fence installations in a single visit.

3. Why does grounding matter so much?

An electric fence is only as effective as its ground system. If the ground rods are too few, too shallow, or poorly placed, the fence circuit is incomplete — the energizer puts out a pulse but animals may not feel a meaningful shock on contact. This is the most common reason horses learn to ignore electric fences. We install proper grounding as a standard part of every electric fence installation.

4. What energizer do I need?

Energizer selection depends on total fence length, wire type (tape vs. Shockline vs. bare wire), vegetation contact on the fence line, and the animals being contained. We select and supply the appropriate energizer for your specific system — one that is not under-powered for your fence length and conditions.

5. Can I add electric fencing to my existing Flex Fence?

Yes. This is one of the most common requests we handle. A Shockline electric rail or electric tape strand can be added to an existing Flex Fence system — either at the top to stop leaning over, or at the bottom to stop reaching under. The Shockline matches the appearance of Flex Fence for a consistent look.
