Nelson Waterers

Nelson 700 Series Waterers employs an exclusive operating system which provides your horses or cattle with fresh water with every drink. A stainless steel drinking bowl is balanced on one end of a beam with a lead weight on the other. As the animal drinks, the system becomes out of balance, causing the beam to tilt and to open the water valve. Fresh water refills the bowl returning the beam to its original position and automatically closing the valve. There are no floats or paddles to cause problems.

Nelson's Water Consumption Indicator (WCI) monitors the water consumption from the waterer, thereby ensuring your awareness of any dehydration to your animals. These can be applied to any Nelson Waterer

Planning & Installation Tips
Choose your watering system carefully. Most systems are built for a long life span. Consider how you may ease the cost of labour on your farm by choosing an automatic watering system which monitors water intake. When selecting the location of your watering system keep the following things in mind:
  • Safety, traffic flow, cleaning and hazardous weather (such as wind)
  • Keep open waterers 6 feet or more away from grain or hay feeders to minimize the fallout into the water.
  • When burying water and hydro lines make a sketch of the area including landmarks and keep this diagram in a safe place. This helps prevent cutting through the lines when future work needs to be done around the barn.
  • Installation of most outdoor waterers require a water line from the barn or water source below the frost line. In Canada, this can be anywhere from 4' to 8'. The water then comes in the bottom of the bowl through a concrete or plastic tube. The tube is used to facilitate ground heat coming up through the bottom of the bowl - this ground heat is the key to most water bowls.
  • Ensure the seal between the bowl and the ground does not let any air through.
Check your waterers daily to be sure they are working.
